Counseling for Children & Teens
of Michigan Residents
As a parent, seeing your child struggle, whether emotionally, socially, or cognitively, is heartbreaking. You may feel lost and utterly overwhelmed; on one hand, it may seem like there are a plethora of solutions to support you and your child or teen’s needs, and on the other hand, it may seem like there are absolutely none.

We want you to know that you’ve made the first step towards getting the help your child or teen needs. Our team at Learning Dreams is dedicated to helping your child, teen or young adult gain the confidence and tools they need to flourish through counseling for children and teens in our Michigan practice.
What is Teen or Children’s Counseling?
Teen or children’s counseling, also referred to as children’s therapy, was developed for the same reasons we have adult therapy. Just like us, children and teens can struggle emotionally and behaviorally, finding it hard to deal with everything from relationships to school and everyday routines to family tragedies.

We see toddlers, children, teens, and college students for a variety of reasons here at Learning Dreams. Common issues we work with include:

-
Grief
-
Bullying
-
Divorce
-
Learning Disabilities
-
Abuse

Even if your child doesn’t seem to be dealing with any “common” issues, our professional clinicians do their utmost to identify what is distressing your child and help them learn the resources they need to resume a healthy and happy life.
How Can Counseling Help Children?
The main goal of teen and child therapy is to help address issues that negatively impact a young person’s development, mental health and overall wellbeing. Our therapists work to help your adolescent understand their emotions and behaviors and why they may be reacting in such ways. For children and teens who have experienced trauma, we help interpret the traumatic experiences and process this information in a way that is meaningful to them.

When a teen’s or child’s emotional or psychological distress is left untreated or “ignored,” their future is put in jeopardy. Often, parents see developmental milestones missed and teachers report issues at school. These delays can be felt far into the future, resulting in even more damage for the individual if they are left to deal with these issues alone.
Preschoolers to college aged young adults can benefit from counseling to work through their emotions and live healthy lives, free from fear, anxiety, or confusion.
What Happens During Therapy Sessions for Children?
Typically during an initial session in child therapy here at Learning Dreams, we sit with both you and your child and go over basic medical history, any prescriptions, any reports from past therapists, and gather your Intake Packet.

From there and during subsequent visits, our mental health professionals will observe, assess, and identify underlying issues that may be causing your child, teenager, or young adult distress. We determine goals and timelines for desired results and develop and provide tools and resources for each individual’s needs.

Along with providing your child with the resources they need to succeed in their life, we provide you, the parent, with peace of mind. We’re here to help you navigate the sometimes scary, overwhelming, and stressful task of helping your child thrive. If you have any additional questions about children’s counseling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
