LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in Michigan

For members of the LGBTQ+ community, therapy can be a difficult subject. In the past, the field of psychology has considered differences in sexual orientation or gender identity to be diagnosable mental health conditions. Today, we understand that this was incorrect, and we are proud to offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy in for Michigan residents at Learning Dreams. This means we aren’t here to judge or “diagnose” your sexual orientation or gender expression. Instead, you’ll receive caring and nonjudgmental counseling that accepts and embraces all of the parts of who you are, helping you to achieve your therapy goals and live a more satisfying life.

What is LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy?

Anyone can experience tough times that spur them to seek counseling, but adults and young people who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community, often experience additional pressures and biases that make daily life more difficult. LGBTQ+ affirming therapy seeks to offer unbiased and supportive counseling that helps those who visit us feel greater levels of self-acceptance and develop skills to navigate an often stressful world. No matter who you are or who you love – you deserve to lead a healthy and joyful life, and we can help.

Why Would Members of the LGBTQ+ Community Seek Therapy?

Unsurprisingly, the common concerns like anxiety, stress, and depression can be compounded by the effects of “othering” or cultural biases against members of the LGBTQ+ community. For example, you may be struggling to find confidence in the workplace, but your lack of self-confidence may be reinforced by tacit biases like professional marketing materials for your company that are heteronormative and fail to show relationship diversity. You’re trying to be a great parent, but you find yourself having to do the work of explaining your relationship to your children, to their friends, and to their friends’ parents in addition to just being a mother or father. Unfortunately, cultural biases are unlikely to disappear in the near future, and this can compound underlying struggles. This additional level of prejudice leaves those in the LGBTQ+ community more likely to experience mood and emotional disorders, develop substance use disorders, and engage in self-harming or self-destructive behaviors. You deserve to live a life free from distress and filled with more joy, and counseling can help.
