What is Couples Counseling?

Couples therapy, marriage counseling, or relationship therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on helping couples improve communication and develop ways to resolve conflicts amicably.

Common issues that bring people to couples counseling include:

  • Infidelity/Adultery

  • Excessive conflicts/resentment

  • Issues with passion/sex

  • Parenting issues

  • Substance abuse and addiction

  • Poor communication

Couples counseling gives each individual in the relationship an opportunity to express their emotions and viewpoints in a safe, confidential environment. With the help of a mental health professional, couples can learn to actively listen to their partner and understand their differences, needs, and emotional nuances.

How Does Counseling Help Couples and Their Relationships?

It’s not uncommon for relationships to be challenging. One of the reasons relationships become problematic is because communication deteriorates and emotions and behaviors are heightened. Couples counseling helps individuals in relationships and marriages first understand their own emotions and resulting actions and behaviors, and then discover how to communicate these feelings and needs to your partner. Relationship therapy also helps couples manage highs and lows within a relationship and understand what exactly a healthy relationship is.

If you and your partner are dealing with issues that are perhaps more severe (cheating, drugs, abuse, etc.) our expert clinicians at Learning Dreams work with you one on one to learn to trust again, rebuild healthy habits, admit issues, and work to resolve them.

What Happens During Therapy Sessions for Couples?

During an initial session, couples meet with one of our dedicated team members to go over any medical history, medications, and any reports form past therapists. We will discuss concerns and what outcomes you’d like to see from counseling.

While most sessions will involve both couples and their therapists, your therapists may request to see you separately. You will also be given communication skills and conflict resolutions tasks to practice at home. We give you these “homework assignments,” so we can hear how you improve as a couple and what does and doesn’t work for you as individuals.
